Joke: men vs. women / homens vs mulheres

Communication Problems

A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment.

Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00am for an early morning business flight.

Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, ‘Please wake me at 5:00am.’ He left it where he knew she would find it.

The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00am and he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn’t wakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed.

The paper said, ‘It is 5:00am. Wake up.’

Men are not equipped for these kinds of contests.

As they say "VIVENDO E APRENDENDO " in English?

The equivalent of the phrase "vivendo e aprendendo" is not generally used in the gerund. So, in English, prefer to say "LIVE AND LEARN". Check out the examples below.
  • As the chairman has said, he made some missteps in a few media appearances. Live and learn. (CNN)
Vivendo e aprendendo.
  • But who knows anything at 19? So you just live and learn, and grow, and try to get on with your life.

So this is personal "live and learn" !!!

War in the Korean!!

North Korea says the region is on the brink of war

United States sent aircraft carriers after bombing the South Korean island on Tuesday (23)

North Korea accused on Wednesday (24) South Korea to lead the region to the "brink of war."
The note, released by the official news agency KCNA said North Korea, said Seoul maintains a "reckless military provocation" and delays the delivery of humanitarian aid to the North.

- South Korea is undermining the process of improving inter-Korean relations, blocking the talks mediated by the Red Cross and driving the situation to the brink of war by following a policy of confrontation with North Korea.

Pyongyang's accusations came a day after an exchange of gunfire on the island of Yeongpyeong that left four South Koreans dead - two soldiers and two civilians - and 18 wounded.

Seoul accuses North Korea of having fired some 200 shells at the South Korean island, while the North's communist government claims that only responded to an attack.

Most of the international community, however, blamed the violence in the region to the North Koreans, who use their nuclear arsenal as a form of blackmail to get outside help in food, fuel and money.

The shooting happened two days after an American scientist has revealed a new uranium enrichment program in North Korea, which increased the tension and concern in the United States and its allies.

The Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, said the new plan gives North Korea the potential to build more nuclear weapons.

Americans and South Koreans held next Sunday (28), military maneuvers near the border of North Korea.

South Korea also announced it will move to new batteries of artillery bombarded the island by North Korea.

U.S. and China say that war in Korea would be "undesirable"

Did you know?

Did you know that learning to think in another language is not just a mental process. It is an ability that depends on respiration, motor coordination, ventilation in the brain, and the speed of thought? As an illustrative example, we can analyse the famous sentence “The book is on the table” which means “O livro está sobre a mesa”, in Portuguese. Compare the number of letters in the two sentences – 19 letters in English and 20 in Portuguese. Also compare the number of syllables – 6 in English and 10 in Portuguese! Taking respiration into account, the sentence in Portuguese is longer, since it has more sounds (syllables) than the English version. If we coordinate thought with language, we certainly have to think more rapidly to think in English since the sentence is spoken in less time (fewer syllables). And this change in the speed of speaking and thought is what is most difficult in developing competency in learning and thinking in English, since it is necessary to alter an old conditioning and accelerate the speed of one’s thoughts.

Ao invés de pensar em Português tente pensar em Inglês: “what the hell, I have to wake up now. Nobody deserves it”. Ao invés de pensar “eu estou subindo as escadas” pense “I’m going up the stairs”.

That’s all folks,

I hope that helps.

Days of the week in English

Hello, some people have doubt of where the names of the days of the week had appeared, then we go to more know a little on the sprouting and the influence of this in the English. In the whole world the names of the days make reference to direct or indirect reference the planets, and this started with the old Romans who identified the days being based on the galaxy.
We can notice that the English received this influence in the formation from the names of the days. They see below:
Sunday (Sunday) - Sun, Day of the Sun.
Monday (Second) - Moon, Day of the Moon.
Tuesday (Third) - Tiw God of the War and the Sky, associated Mars.
Wednesday (Fourth) - Woden King of the Deuses, associated the Mercury.
Thursday (Fifth) - Thor God of the Thunder, associated Jupiter.
Friday (Sixth) - Frigg Woman of Woden, associate Venus.
Saturday (Saturday) - Saturn God of Agriculture, associated Saturn.
The working days we call weekdays, and the end of week of weekend. The names of the days always must be initiated with capital letter and be followed of the definite article “on”.
Ex.: I don't work on Monday.
Ex.: There ploughs many parties on Fridays.
Curiosity: Some curious ones can have a doubt, “Because the days of the week are so different in Portuguese”. The lusitanos had the custom to make commerce in streets and squares, and the region that they would make the “fair” was in the order of second region, third and so on. The first day was not as “First-Fair” for them to dedicate the first day of the week to the God of the Sun.

To enjoy - Central Park

Central Park is a large park (with 341 hectares) within the U.S. city of New York, the state of the same name. It has an area of 3.4 square kilometers and is located in the district of Manhattan.
The park, which existed for 150 years, is considered by many New Yorkers, an oasis within the great forest of skyscrapers in the region. It is a place where people can slow down the frantic New York: people can sit on a bench and read the newspaper, chat with friends, play games, ride a bike or playing with children.
With approximately twenty-five million visitors annually, Central Park is the most visited park in the city and appears in many movies and television programs, making it known worldwide.
It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who later created Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Although the park looks natural, it is in fact almost entirely landscaped and contains several artificial lakes, hiking trails, two ice rinks, a living shrine and diverse fields.

The history of COD

Updated Oct. 13, 2010: At a glance, Call of Duty is much like every other game out there; almost extraordinarily ordinary. To the uninitiated, it looks like another "me too" tale of heroic army men, told from a first-person perspective. But it's Call of Duty's ability to rise above the competition – and without the need for attention-grabbing gimmicks – that makes it so exceptional, even with six proper games in as many years, and just as many spin-offs. Call of Duty snatched the annual World War II franchise crown from the industry's largest publisher, and helped pave the way for Activision's world conquest. With Modern Warfare 2 just around the corner, it shows no signs of slowing down.

Present Perfect

Hello guys, today we will study a verb tense that does not exist in Portuguese, the present perfect, bellow we teach the concept, rules and show some examples. Good use!
As it was said, the present perfect tense is verb tense that has no equivalent in Portuguese. Usually it indicates actions that occurred in the past and still have connections with the present , or shares indeterminate past actions and actions recently completed.
In relation to syntactic structure, the present perfect is a time composed of two verbs: one main and one auxiliary. The auxiliary is the verb to have (simple present), ie: have (for: I, you, we, They) or has (for: he, she, it). The main verb should always be in the participle.
Ex: Subject + auxilliar verb have (on present) + main verb on participle + complement
Following the example:
I + have + lived + in Australia for 12 years.

Some samples more:
You have studied hard lately.
She has just arrived.
She has danced since she is seven years old.

Ex.: She is as tall as Jane. (Ela é tão alta quanto Jane.)
Ex.: She isn’t so tall as Jane.
Ex.: Some species are less adaptable than others.
Quando o adjetivo for monossilábico usamos: (adjetivo + sufixo er + than).
Ex.: A Lion is stronger than a wolf.
Ex.: Julie is more beautiful than Lana. (Julie é mais bonita do que Lana).
         Superlativo:
Usamos quando queremos dar maior intensificação do adjetivo a algo. Quando o adjetivo for monossilábico usamos: (the + adjetivo + sufixo est).
Ex.: February is the shortest month of the year. (Fevereiro é o mês mais curto do ano.)
Com adjetivos de mais de uma sílaba, usamos: (the most + adjetivo).
Ex.: This is the most efficient program of all.
See ya!

About HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus (a member of the retrovirus family) that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which the immune systemopportunistic infections. Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk. Within these bodily fluids, HIV is present as both free virus particles and virus within infected immune cells. The four major routes of transmission are unsafe sex, contaminated needles, breast milk, and transmission from an infected mother to her baby at birth (perinatal transmission). Screening of blood products for HIV has largely eliminated transmission through blood transfusions or infected blood products in the developed world. begins to fail, leading to life-threatening
HIV infection in humans is considered pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). Nevertheless, complacency about HIV may play a key role in HIV risk. From its discovery in 1981 to 2006, AIDS killed more than 25 million people. HIV infects about 0.6% of the world's population. In 2005 alone, AIDS claimed an estimated 2.4–3.3 million lives, of which more than 570,000 were children. A third of these deaths are occurring in Sub-Saharan Africa, retarding economic growth and increasing poverty. According to current estimates, HIV is set to infect 90 million people in Africa, resulting in a minimum estimate of 18 million orphans. Antiretroviral treatment reduces both the mortality and the morbidity of HIV infection, but routine access to antiretroviral medication is not available in all countries.

Kevin Fenton, MD, PhD, director of the CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, released a statement that reminded Americans of the toll HIV/AIDS has taken.
"On this World AIDS Day, we are reminded that the fight against HIV is far from over, in the United States and around the world," Fenton said. "Every nine and a half minutes, someone in the United States is newly infected with HIV. One in five of the more than 1 million people living with HIV in this country are unaware of their infections and may be unknowingly transmitting the virus to others."

Jonathan Mermin, MD, MPH, director of the division of HIV/AIDS prevention at the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, echoed Fenton's sentiments and said increasing the number of health care providers should be made a priority in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
"We must acknowledge and work to expand the critical role of health care providers in stemming the toll of HIV/AIDS in the United States," Mermin said. "In the early days of HIV in this country, health care providers were on the front lines in identifying and confronting an unknown and emerging epidemic. They played a key role in research to identify effective treatments and have helped extend the length and quality of life of countless Americans living with HIV and AIDS. And although the epidemic has changed over time, the role of health care providers remains just as important today, not only for treating those with HIV, but also for helping to stop new infections."
